An Old New Commandment

"Dear friends, I am not writing you a new command but an old one, which you have had since the beginning. This old command is the message you have heard. Yet I am writing you an new command" (1 Jn.2:7-8a)

Is the apostle John speaking in circles here in today's verses? Can he write them an old command and a new one at the same time? We must remember that John's words were the last ones of the New Testament to be written. Those who he wrote to had probably been Christians for some time. He appeals to them (and us) to think about what they had first learned from the apostles and from those who in turn taught the message of the apostles. In this sense, he was not really writing anything groundbreaking or new. He was saying that there could not be a true love for Jesus that was separate from obedience of the truth. Part of the reason for his writing this message was that there were those who were perverting this truth. When the message of the gospel had made its debut on the world stage, it was radically new. The Biblical command to love was old and dated back to Old Testament days, so, where does this newness come in? If we complete verse eight from today's verses, we may get some insight... "its truth is seen in him and you, because the darkness is passing and the true light is already shining." The newness is seen, and dramatically illustrated, in what Jesus did on the cross. Another newness was to be exhibited in the daily living of Jesus' followers. It must be an integral part of our daily walk for us to grow in love. We are to grow in love for the Lord, of course... But to show the magnitude of that love, we are to grow in love for each other. Our love is the wellspring from which flows to way people treat others. If we are to be in the light, we have to love each other... If we want to stay in the light, we must keep loving each other.. Old and new, blended together to perfection....

Have a wonderful day... Love one another... Love mark Phil.4:11
