Love On Display

"Do not be like Cain, who belonged to the evil one and murdered his brother. And why did he murder him? Because his own actions were evil and his brother's were righteous. Do not be surprised, my brothers, if the world hates you" (1 Jn.3:12-13).

When a jeweler shows a fine gem to someone, he wants them to see its beauty. Often he will display it on a dark felt or velvet cloth. The contrast between the fine gem and the cloth brings out the luster and shape of the stone, enhancing its beauty. Certain lovely aspects of the stone might go unnoticed without that contrast. John has us take a look at the hatred that Cain had for his brother Abel in the book of Genesis. Abel's righteousness (love) shines brightly against the dark backround of Cain's hatred. John explains in today's verses why Cain hated his brother, and it is just a bit chilling. "Because his own actions were evil and his brother's were righteous." There are some people in the world that have a hatred for Christians for no other reason than they are good. Those that are willing to display their love should not be threatened by this, but keep on doing good. When I was a boy in grade school, I made a poor grade in math. When I showed my report card to my mom, I was quick to let her know that Aaron (a friend) made a worse grade. She was in no way interested with that contrast. She wanted me to do well.. As Christians, we must display our love with words and actions. There is no need for the contrast used by the evil ones. Lets not catch ourselves saying or thinking; "Well, I might not be doing as well as I should, but at least I'm better than so and so." I don't believe that the Lord is interested in that contrast either. Whether folks hate me or like me should not be a determiner of my actions. God wants us to display our love by the things that we say and do. Final judgement will not be a dog and pony show, with me being contrasted with others. Lets not be afraid to display the courage of our convictions in our lives. "Let us not grow weary in doing good" (Gal.6:9). Doing good is the way that we display our love....

Have a wonderful day... Do Good... Give GOD the glory... Love mark Phil.4:11
