LThe X Games of Love

"If we love one another, God abides in us, and His love is perfected in us" (1 Jn.4:12).

Have you ever watched the X Games on TV? The X stands for Extreme... The Summer X Games consist of skateboarding, moto-cross tricks, and BMX stunts. To us in my generation, they are Extreme indeed... Let me lay an extreme idea on you and see if you agree or not. Love is an extreme word... The apostle John infers that God's presence, power, and love do not manifest themselves in images, some mushy emotional state, or even words... They arise from the hearts of believers in the form of good deeds, like a lovely aroma emanates from a magnolia. Here's another extreme thought that comes from today's verse. By Himself, God cannot bring love to perfection, because it can only go part of the way... Love brought to perfection only happens when humans assimilate it. His love must be put to work by His people in order for it to become the perfect love that He wants it to be. Who can forget Elvis Presley's hit song, Love Me Tender... It sets a tone for the word love as it is shown to be.... well.... tender... We can show our love through tenderness, but another part of love that may be seen as extreme is its boldness. Not only is love shown through tenderness, kindness, and generosity, but also in boldness. "This is how we know what love is: Jesus Christ laid down His life for us. And we ought to lay our life down for our brothers" (1 Jn.3:17). John is letting us know that such love and such behavior is a result of the bold and presumptuous nature of love. Its extreme nature. Lastly, we return to the pattern of life that Jesus modeled for us, His people... Believers love because He loved us first. As Jesus walked through the world as a human like us, He showed us how to love. If we want to please God, we must show love or our lives are a lie. Both the tender part, and the extreme part...

Have a wonderful day... Go about doing good... Love mark phil.4:11
