Fear - The Enemy

"There is no fear in love. But perfect love drives out fear, because fear has to do with punishment. The one who fears is not made perfect in love" (1 Jn.4:18).

In team sports, the object of the particular game we play is to win. All of the skills that are practiced over and over again are designed to refine those skills. The team that utilizes those skills the best usually wins. Sports mirror life in that we all want to be winners, especially that ultimate win. The apostle Paul puts it this way: "Forgetting what is behind and straining for what is ahead, I press on toward the goal to win the prize for which God has called me heavenward in Christ Jesus" (Phil.3:13-14). Paul feels strongly about this, because in the Book of First Corinthians he writes: "Do you not know that in a race all the runners run, but only one gets the prize? Run in such a way as to get the prize" (9:24). Do you notice that something is missing here? Paul does not mention a fear of losing. The object of playing the game is to win, not to be afraid of losing. Fear is often the enemy of Christian living. Some are afraid of failure... afraid that their lives are not good enough... even afraid that they won't be good enough at judgement... Do you remember the Parable of the Talents? (Matt.25:14-30). The excuse that the one-talent man used was: "So I was afraid and went out and hid your talent in the ground" (V 25). We cannot hide our talents because we are afraid of failure. In today's verse, John says that perfect love drives out fear! I believe that he was talking about the paralyzing fear that incapacitates people to the extent that they put their focus on their weaknesses. When this is done, striving for holiness comes to a grinding halt. We ought to strive with all our might to be righteous people, because it is what the Lord wants of us. Lets make sure that we walk as Jesus walked. His perfect love in us will drive out the fear of losing and make winners of us all.

Have a great day... Make a difference... Love mark Phil.4:11
