Faith is the Victory

"Faith is the victory we know, that overcomes the world... Faith is the victory! Faith is the victory! O glorious victory that overcomes the world."

From, Encamped Along the Hills of Light... John H. Yates 1891

John Yates famous hymn, like many of the songs we sing in church, has a scriptural origin. "For whoever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that overcomes the world --- our faith" (1 Jn.5:4). The apostle John makes an important statement about one's faith in relationship to being born of God... In the first verse of this chapter he writes: "Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and whoever loves Him loves the Child born of Him." Belief in Jesus as God's Son is no casual matter. It must be a belief that grabs hold of us completely. It must capture our soul, heart, and mind. This belief must inspire us on to new heights. Heights of love and faith that far exceed anything here on earth. This faith and love, in combination, are the cornerstones to being born again. John wrote, being inspired by the Holy Spirit. He anticipated that one's faith and love might ebb and flow in intensity, perhaps because of some doubt creeping in. To get us past these possible doubts, he pointed his readers toward their behavior. In their obedience to God, love and faith become manifest in how one acts, not just how one believes. He says that our love and faith finds its logical completion in our desire to keep His commandments. "This is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome" (V 2). This sounds very much like Jesus saying: "For my yoke is easy and my burden is light" (Matt.11:30). Our obedience in taking on His yoke testifies that we are saved and results in joy and peace in this world. It is a wonderful reward and tells us that faith is indeed the victory that overcomes the world...
