Responding To Materialism


"Your silver has become dross, your choice wine is diluted with water. Your rulers are rebels, companions of thieves; they all love bribes and chase after gifts. They do not defend the cause of the fatherless; the widow's case does not come before them" (Isa.1:22-23).

So many people in the world find their true master to be the Dollar Almighty... Jesus spent a lot of time during His ministry trying to debunk this attitude. He taught that there is so much more to life than material prosperity, and that a person's life does not consist in the abundance of stuff... Since today's verses come from the pen of the prophet Isaiah (750 BC) it appears that the problem has always existed. It is succinctly illustrated in the Parable of the Rich Fool in Lk.12:16-21, and Jesus amplified the teaching in Matt.6:19-20. I guess what is really of importance here is our response to this age old dilemma... I don't mean to over simplify here, but our response needs to exemplify Jesus' response. In our everyday lives we must strive for the true peace, love, and joy that Jesus offers to us. "If you obey my commands, you will remain in my love, just as I have obeyed My Father's commands and remain in His love" (Jn.15:10). We respond to Jesus' teachings when we heed His words... "but by prayer and supplication, present your requests to God...." (Phil.4:6). Spending time in prayer is an everyday avenue to receive His peace, love, and joy. This message is for the poor, middle class, and rich.. "I know what it is to be in need, and I know what it is to have plenty. I have learned the secret of being content in any and every situation, whether well-fed or hungry, whether living in plenty or in want" (Phil.4:12). If we fail to spend the time necessary in the important things, how can we convince others that we actually are living the abundant life? Being content and willing to share indicates that we are mirroring Jesus' teaching about true riches. Is that our response?
