How To Lay Up The Treasure

"Provide purses for yourselves that will not wear out, a treasure in heaven, that will not be exhausted, where no thief comes near and no moth destroys. For where your treasure is, there will be your heart also" (Lk.12:33-34).

In the sad parable of The Rich Young Ruler, Jesus sets forth one of the ways to Lay Up The Treasure... As he perceives that the young man has put too much stock in earthly possessions, He says: "You still lack one thing. Sell everything you have and give the money to the poor, and you will have a treasure in heaven. Then come and follow me" (Lk.18:22). I would hope that most people's affection for earthly treasures is not as drastic as that of this young man. But parables like this one are certainly written with a purpose. Today's verse follows one spoken to His disciples about selling all they have and giving it to the poor. The apostle Paul near the end of his first letter to Timothy says this: "Command those who are rich in this present world not to be arrogant nor to put their hope in wealth, which is so uncertain, but put their hope in God, who richly provides us with everything for our enjoyment. Command them to do good, to be rich in good deeds, and be generous and willing to share" (6:17-18). I really like the part about being rich in good works... Those that have been blessed with more can certainly feed and clothe more people. There is one overriding issue here that I would be remiss to omit. There are not enough shared possessions out there that will allow someone to purchase eternal life. As a matter of fact, there are not enough good deeds either. Eternal life is not something that can be bought, because it has already been purchased for us with the precious blood of Jesus. We are the blessed recipients of every spiritual blessing through Jesus Christ. That being said, the poor must still be clothed and fed. Through sharing we are able to free our hearts from temptation of laying up the wrong treasure. It also serves to remind us of the true reward we will receive...

Have a great day... Christians should make a difference... Love mark Phil.4:11
