Faithful Love

"Faithful love is a friend just when hope seems to end, Welcome face, sweet embrace, tender touch filled
with grace. Faithful love, endless power, living flame, Spirit's fire; Burning bright in the night, guiding my way.
" From the hymn, Faithful Love.... Ken Young 1993

In the Book of Ruth, we find the development of a wonderful Faithful Love... Naomi's husband and sons have died and all she has left are her two daughter-in-laws... Ruth and Orpah... They are from the region of Moab and their people are worshipping a multiplicity of gods. Naomi's advice to them is to return to their homeland, even if it meant worshipping those gods. After much persuasion, Orpah agrees, but Ruth refuses. She clings to her mother-in law with a faithful love. Maybe you have heard Ruth 1:16-17 used in wedding ceremonies... It should be... "Don't urge me to leave you or turn back from you. Where you will go I will go, and where you stay I will stay. Your people will be my people, and your God my God. Where you die I will die, and there will I be buried. May the Lord deal with me, be it ever so severely, if anything but death separates you from me" Now that's FAITHFUL LOVE! Husbands and wives are certainly blessed when love evolves into a friendship, but marriage is more than romantic love and friendship. Marriage is a total, lifelong commitment to God, each other, society, and family. Ruth's words encompass all of these things. She has made a promise of total commitment to Naomi. The words are even more poignant in light of the physical prospects that lie before her. The words of faithful love are sealed as she swears her commitment to Naomi in the name of Israel's God. What a wonderful lesson that Ruth, a foreigner, gives to us as people of God. In our lives, Jesus has filled us with the example of faithful love... Ruth did a really good job too...

Have a wonderful day... Let His light shine through you... Love mark Phil.4:11
