The Local Church - Why We Need It

"The church's one foundation is Jesus Christ the Lord; She is His new creation by water and the Word; From heaven He came and sought her to be His holy bride; With His own blood He bought her, and for her life He died" From, The Church's One Foundation... Samuel J. Stone 1860s

When Peter and the other apostles baptized those 3,000 or so people on the Day of Pentecost,(Acts 2:41) something special happened. The church was formed. Whenever this fellowship of believers got together, we are told what they did. "They devoted themselves to the apostles teaching and to the fellowship, to the breaking of bread, and to prayer" (Acts 2:42). This was the first fellowship of Christians. The church is a part of God's great plan, intended to provide as much support and encouragement we need as Jesus' disciples. In the Book of Hebrews (10:25) we are told not to give up meeting together. The previous verse lets us know one of the most important reasons. "And let us consider how we may spur one another on toward love and good deeds." For me, this is one of the foundational reasons for meeting together as a local church. There are others! When many of the members are doing their part, individual growth takes place. This is not some ritualistic, lockstep things, but actual encouragement to read, meditate, pray, and do good works for the Lord. Through this encouragement, we can help ourselves and others to remain faithful to the Lord. "But encourage one another daily, as long as it is called Today, so that none of you may be hardened by sin's deceitfulness" (Heb.3:13). Lastly, there is that very important comfort issue. Our God is the Father of all compassion and comfort, but this extends to those within his church. "so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves have received from God" (2 Cor.1:4). The compassion of one Christian for another in times of difficulty is immeasurable. Lets commit to be the best possible local church members that we can be...
