Non-Spectacular Involvement

"So Ruth stayed close to the servant girls of Boaz to glean until the barley and wheat harvests were finished. And she lived with her mother-in law" (Ruth 2:23).

We live in the age of the spectacular. Our homes are easily heated in winter and cooled in the summer. When we must travel a great distance, the airplane is there for our convenience. My mom was born in 1910 and lived until 2005. I am amazed when I think of the great scientific changes that she saw in her life. The word spectacular comes to mind. Often, as we read our Bibles, miracles take place that we would certainly describe as spectacular. How about a heart or kidney transplant... Would they qualify in that way too? I think of axe head floating. (2 Kings 6:1-7)... How about a burning bush (Ex.3) or a wooden staff turning into a snake. (Ex.4)... Now these things were spectacular.... In the Book of Ruth, I am impressed with its teaching by the Un-spectacular... God's hand is certainly all through the book, but there are no dreams, spectacular miracles, or visions that intertwine through it. We must be patient people today to see God's quiet hand at work in the drama that is our life. Just as things were unfolding quietly in the life of Ruth and her mother-in-law Naomi, in our lives the elderly die, a child suffers, and a good person loses their job. Through it all, God reigns above us. He is aware of all the twists and quirks of life, and at moments of His choosing He steps in. Sometimes tragedy is turned into triumph, but it is God's people who bow before Him, even when life seems to have taken a turn for the worst. Oh, God has stepped in with spectacular reversals of fortune, but most often it is, as in the case of Ruth and Naomi, in a quiet way. He rules in non-spectacular events just as He does in great ones. Ruth, Naomi, and now Boaz, were probably not aware of God's hand in what was going on. We read works like the Book of Ruth over and over because of God's work in their lives.. Quiet, unassuming, non-spectacular work....

Have a wonderful day... Do good... Give God the glory... Love mark Phil.4:11
