The Good Stuff About Teaching

"For I was very glad when brethren came and testified to your truth, that is, how you are walking in truth. I have no greater joy than this, to hear of my children walking in the truth" (3Jn. 3-4).

I'm not a big list guy, but I found this one to be appropriate for this devotional. The psychologist William Glasser compiled these numbers and listed them in regard to how and what we learn:

                                                  10% of what we read
                                                  20% of what we hear
                                                  30% of what we see
50% of what we see and hear
70% of what we discuss with others
80% of what we experience personally
95% of what we teach others

This list kind of blew me away... If this information is anywhere near correct, it would seem that there is a great benefit to a person when he or she decides to teach others. A part of this may be attributable to the study, preparation, and responsibility that is required to to teach others. But I believe that the real learning bonus comes by the actual process of teaching to other people... We can trace the blessedness through God's Word... "How blessed is the man who does not walk in the counsel of the wicked, nor stand in the path of sinners, nor sit in the seat of the scoffers. But his delight is in the law of the Lord, and in His Law he meditates day and night. He will be like a tree firmly planted by streams of water, which yields its fruit in its season. And its leaf does not wither; and in whatever he does, he prospers" (Psa:1-3). This blessedness comes first by meditating on God's Word. Jesus said: "If you know these things, you are blessed if you do them" (Jn.13:17). The second blessing is in the actual doing of God's Word. Now we come to the teaching part...If you take a look at today's verses from 3 John, you find a joyous John. He is filled with joy because those people he had taught are walking in the truth... He had taught them well and now he sees that the fruit of his labor has not been in vain. Students ask good teachers to write letters of recommendation for them. Students come back and thank the teacher for their help in molding them, Can you think of a teacher(s) who had a significant impact on you? And of course, there's that extra 95% bonus that comes from teaching.... You get to learn a lot of stuff.. My mom would have said.... "What a bargain."

Have a great start to your week.... Begin it with a RAK or two... Love mark Phil.4:11
