Taking Up Residence

"Dear friends, I urge you, as aliens and strangers in the world, to abstain from sinful desires, which war against your soul" (1Pet.2:11).

Probably all of us have moved before. Early in our lives, when we don't have many possessions, the moves are rather easy and uncomplicated. Jane and I were able to put all of our stuff in a 1968 Camaro and an old Volkswagon Beetle on our first move. As Christians, we are in a way, residents.... Temporary residents.... Peter addresses us as aliens and strangers in the world in today's verse. The indication is that we residents in a world that is not our own. As we were on our vacation in Europe, that alien and stranger thing was actually pronounced as we moved from place to place speaking a different language. If the Lord considers us as aliens in this world, just what are our responsibilities in it? The Bible is very clear in this area, and the next verse give us a broad clue... "Live such good lives among the pagans that, though they may accuse you of doing wrong, they may see your good deeds and glorify God on the day He visits us" (V 12). When the apostle Paul writes to the church at Philippi, he said: "Do everything without complaining or arguing, so that you may become blameless and pure children of God without fault in a crooked and depraved generation, in which you shine like stars in the universe" (2:14-15). No matter what is going on around us, we are called to be better.... MUCH BETTER! We're supposed to be the stars. Along the way, we have a responsibility to lift up and encourage others to what is right. This type of conduct is more that just good... It is more than even exceptional. We are to be extraordinarily good. Our conduct is to be what one might call remarkable... If it sounds like a big task, it is... The good life wouldn't be very good if we didn't have to work at it. We all have to dig deep within ourselves to be those extraordinary people that the Lord wants us to be....

Have a great day... Do good, give the Lord the credit.... Love mark Phil.4:11
