Service Plus - Sailing In The Right Direction

"But Jonah ran away from the Lord and headed for Tarshish. He went down to Joppa, where he found a ship bound for that port. After paying the fare, he went aboard and sailed for Tarshish to flee from the Lord" (Jon.1:3).

We love to tell the story about Jonah as a children's tale. It makes for great use of the imagination, and is one of the best of the Veggie Tales series. For me, Jonah fits in very nicely today as a backdrop against our service to the Lord. In the first two verses of the book, the Word of the Lord comes to Jonah, as he is instructed to go and preach in Nineveh. Nineveh is the capital of Assyria, and is very wicked city. How does Jonah respond? He takes the first ship going in the opposite direction. Moses did much the same thing when God instructed him to go and speak with the Pharaoh. (Ex.3:10-11). The Lord places no limits on whom, where, and when we will serve others. Many will serve the Lord, but not when it means serving those they may not like. Maybe we ought to backtrack a bit and make sure that our service is always to the right Master. Jesus said: "No one can serve two masters......" I think that most of us can quote the rest of that verse.... The Parable of the Sower is clear about the seed that fell among the thorns. My last thoughts in this series on service falls into the arena of attitude. Sometimes we forget how graciously that the Lord has and is serving us when it comes to our turn. The foundational attitudes that should dominate our life of service are those of being unselfish and humble. Nobody wants a servant with a hidden agenda. There is no service that we do that is done for recognition or praise. Let me finish with the words of the apostle Paul in his letter to the church at Philippi.... "Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your own interests, but also to the interests of others" Lets all make sure that we sail in the right direction.....

Have a great day... Go about doing good.... Love mark Phil.4:11
