Church of Christ

Searching For Unity

"I appeal to you brothers, in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ, that all of you agree with one another so that there may be no divisions among you and that you may be perfectly united in one mind and thought" (1 Cor.1:10).

The apostle Paul gives us a lot to think about in today's verse, which seems to have unity at it's core. Does he want us all to be completely alike? Just giving thought to the diverse personalities of people, I would think this to be impossible. Paul must be talking about something slightly different. Whether it was the 1st century church, or the church of today, unity is essential. If a church hopes to hold Christ up to the world as the Son of God and Savior of mankind, it must make the Lord manifest by its very example. I believe that a key component here is brotherly love. Where there is petty arguing, bickering, and selfish ambition, unity takes a back seat. The true Christian example and model begins and ends with brotherly love and kindness. "A new command I give you; Love one another. As I have loved you, so you must love one another" (Jn.13:34).... In the very next verse, Jesus explains why.... "By this all men will know that you are my disciples, if you love one another." People have enough turmoil in their own lives to want to have to endure it within a church. Jesus himself prayed for this unity. "My prayer is not for them alone. I pray for those who will believe in me through their message, that all of them may be one, Father, just as you are in me and I am in you" (Jn.17:20-21). Paul argued that every member ought to contribute his or her gifts to the body of believers. Why? I think it is because they should be one. What do you think? More about unity tomorrow...

Have a wonderful day... Do good, give God the glory.... Love mark Phil.4:11
