An Excellent Knowledge

"I consider everything a loss compared to the surpassing greatness of knowing Christ Jesus my Lord" (Phil.3:8)

One of the riches of life is knowing things. The more we know about our jobs, the better we are at them. The more we get to know the skill of a particular game, the better we are at it. Within our spiritual life, the same is true and is explained in today's verse. The apostle Paul had a desire to really know Jesus. I take that to mean having a greater knowledge of him. In the first chapter of Peter's second epistle, he gives us a list of virtues that we are to build our lives upon. He prefaces the list with these words... "His divine power has given us everything we need for life and godliness through our knowledge of him who has called us by his own glory and goodness" (1:3). To get his point across even further, knowledge is one of those virtues. This knowledge that we gain about Jesus must be a very personal one. A person may initially learn about Jesus from someone else, but from there on it is up to us to grow in this knowledge. I may look at a spiritual person and desire to gain some of the knowledge they have, but make no mistake.... Our knowledge of Him must be very personal. We must come to know Him for ourselves. When Paul talked about gaining this knowledge, he was crystal clear about it's personal nature. "I want to know Christ and the power of his resurrection" (Phil.3:10). We must be willing to speak in the first person like Paul did in this verse when it comes to our knowledge of Him. Along with being personal, our knowledge of Jesus must be a loving one. It must actually be affectionate, because if I know Him at all, I must love Him. Jesus actually made this a bedrock teaching about our knowledge and love of Him... "Love the Lord with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind" (Matt.22:37). It would be good for us to meditate upon getting to know and love Jesus more and more each day... With all of our hearts, souls, and minds....

Have a great day... Go about doing good... Love mark Phil.4:11
