Other's First - A Principle To Live By

"For you know the grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, that though he was rich, yet for your sake's he became poor, so that you, through his poverty, might become rich" (2 Cor.8:9).

The apostle Paul puts the supreme and inescapable incentive of Christian generosity and service into the one sentence of today's verse. Jesus told us Himself that He came to the earth to serve rather than be served (Matt.20:28). He calls on us in the Bible to have this same attitude time after time. It would be good for us to read and meditate upon Phil.2:3-8 today, as it talks about us having the same attitude as that of Jesus. These verses are preceded by some others that relate to an other's first principle for our lives... In imitating Christ's humility, Paul writes: "Do nothing out of selfish ambition or vain conceit, but in humility consider others better than yourselves. Each of you should look not only to your interests, but also to the interests of others" (Phil.2:3-4). Jesus exemplified this wonderful principle of Christian living, and Paul expanded upon it. Paul even gave us the wonderful example of the Macedonian church, that gave even though they did not have much of their own. Paul wrote of them to the Corinthians and the Philippians so that their liberality could be copied. These Macedonian Christians exemplified the true value of the others first principle in their actions. The church at Philippi also gave much to Paul to keep him going. To this he responded: "And my God will meet all your needs according to his glorious riches in Christ Jesus" (4:20). When we put the kingdom of God and others before ourselves, then the Lord will see to it that we have all the things we need.... Others first... A principle to live by...
