One Hit Wonder

"For this very reason, make every effort to add to your faith goodness; and to goodness, knowledge; and to knowledge, self-control; and to self-control, perseverance; and to perseverance, godliness; and to godliness, brotherly kindness; and to brotherly kindness, love" (2 Pet.1:5-7).

If you have followed music through the years, you are probably familiar with today's title. There are songs out there that have been recorded by an artist or group that have become hit songs... For some inexplicable reason, that artist or group never produces another song nearly as good as that one. We refer to that one popular song as a "one hit wonder..." Becoming a Christian is not a simple matter of a one-time conversion experience, and never being heard from again... When we decide to live under Christ's banner some requirements are to follow which take wisdom and careful decision making. In this beginning section of Peter's Second Epistle, he offers a wonderful list of virtues that will give guidance to believers once they have decided to follow Jesus. The list is by no means exhaustive, but it is a good way to get going. Peter compiles this wonderful list after letting us know that we have been given the opportunity to participate in the "divine nature," having escaped the "corruption in the world cause by evil desires." (V4) He continues the thought as we start today's verses, with the words, "for this reason, make every effort to...." These words usher the Christian in from a corruptible world, into Jesus' incorruptible one. You may take notice that Peter's list is bracketed by two very special virtues. The list starts with faith and ends with love...These two virtues are very noble in nature and epitomize behavioral characteristics one must possess in order to please God. All of the virtues (sometimes called graces) that are sandwiched in between try to explain what a life of faith and love is all about. Peter's list, though not exhaustive, could have other virtues that may even be more important. But of this I am certain! When we grow in the virtues of Peter's list, we will improve on the foundation of our confession and obedience. After all... We don't want to be a one hit wonder...

Have a great day... Make a difference... Love mark Phil.4:11
