Lacking The Good Stuff

"But if anyone does not have them, he is nearsighted and blind, and has forgotten that he has been cleansed from his past sins" (2 Pet.1:9).

Last time I touched on the eight virtues or graces that the apostle Peter listed here in the first chapter of 2 Peter. The list compares well to Paul's list in Gal.5:22 that we refer to as the Fruit of the Spirit. These virtues will help us to have a well-rounded and fruitful Christian life. They keep us from being one hit wonders... Today's verse is preceded by this one: "For if you possess these qualities in increasing measures, they will keep you from being ineffective and unproductive in your knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ" (V8). As we read today's verse, we see how unrelenting that Peter is about this subject. I am not exactly sure how someone can be nearsighted and blind at the same time. The NAS version translates the terms as blind or short-sighted... Perhaps the nearsightedness refers to one shutting their eyes. That might explain the blindness too. Any way we look at it, the blindness is not literal, but rather a figure of speech. For Peter, the blindness of those who lacked these qualities consisted in their short-sightedness... Peter wants us to be effective and productive Christians. Christians are to absorb these virtues... "to possess these qualities in increasing measures...." I believe that those who do such will become the Christians that Jesus wants us to become. We will be known by the fruit that we produce in ever increasing number and quality. We will be the people within the church that can be counted upon to get things done. Not only that, but we can be assured that we will find an unreserved, joyous, and generous welcome into the eternal kingdom that has been prepared for us. Try to find the time today to read the list of virtues and see how you are doing in respect to them. In case you forgot them, they are; faith, goodness, knowledge, self-control, perseverance, godliness, brotherly kindness, love.... After all, we don't want to be lacking the good stuff....

Have a great start to your week... Begin it with a RAK or two... Love mark Phil.4:11
