Remember Sardis

"Reform your actions, and I will let you live in this place. Do not trust in deceptive words and say, 'This is the temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord'" (Jer.7:3-4).

For extra special emphasis, have you ever repeated yourself? In today's scripture, Jeremiah does just that. The nation of Judah was in a precarious situation. The nation of Israel had already been taken captive by the Assyrians, and Nebuchadnezzar, the Babylonian king, had defeated them and were headed toward Jerusalem. It was time for the people to put their trust in the Lord. As we read it would seem that they were not! Instead of reforming their actions, they took on a false trust. Notice the triplicate words... "The temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord, the temple of the Lord." Their false thinking was that surely the Lord would not allow His Temple to be destroyed. We will be safe... The Lord was requiring more than outward piety and rituals involving temple worship. "If you really change your ways and your actions .... then I will let you live in this place...." (V5) The people were talking about the building and the Lord wanted their hearts... Such a true change of heart and actions would save them from the Babylonians. Through the prophet Jeremiah, the Lord reinforces how it had always been. As some food for thought, could Christians today harbor a similar trust? Are there those who would say, "I'm alright because I'm in the Lord's church, the Lord's church, the Lord's church?" Is our salvation guaranteed because we are members of a church? I believe that Jesus demands more! Church membership does not excuse negligence and inactive service. Just membership is not enough. The Book of Revelation was written to seven Asian churches, Sardis among them. It might be good for us to read Rev.3:1-6. They had a "living name." They were the church at Sardis, but this did not preclude their salvation. As in the days of Jeremiah, God is still interested in our hearts and actions. As they could not hide behind the temple, we cannot hide behind church membership. God's grace depends on our holy living.... Some more on this tomorrow....

Have a great day... Do good and give God the glory... Love mark Phil.4:11
