Virtue By Association

"Those whom I love. I reprove and discipline, therefore be zealous and repent" (Rev.3:19).

So.... If I'm a cool guy, and you hang around with me, does that make you cool? Just a little teaser to begin today's devotional. The verse above, from the third chapter of the Book of Revelation, was written to an entire church. It is directed to the church in Laodicea and because of the wording, more has been written about it than of the other six churches. "I know your deeds, that you are neither cold or hot. I wish you were one or the other! So, because you are lukewarm, --- neither hot or cold --- I am about to spit you out of my mouth" (Vs 15-16). During this time, Laodicea was one of the wealthiest cities in the Roman region of Phrygia, It might be good for us to read verses 14 to 22, to get the full flavor of God's rebuke of them. In verse 18, three things are alluded to about their wealth: A rich textile industry, financial wealth, a famous eye salve.... Despite all that they had, they are being referred to as lukewarm... They were in danger of expulsion because they had become worldly. They were in dire need of rebuke and chastening, which they were getting here. It doesn't seem like the church here at Laodicea was using what they had for the healing of the spiritually sick, or refreshing the spiritually weary. But hold on a minute... They were a church, right? Isn't the Lord going to cut them some slack because of that? You must take a look at my tongue-in-cheek title today... The prophet Jeremiah, in yesterday's devotional, couldn't rely on their relationship to the temple. There was to be no virtue by association... We also cannot today think that just because we are members of a church that we will automatically be ushered into heaven. We also cannot rely on virtue by association. God expects wholehearted devotion and service to Him from each of us. It is good for Christians to hang around other Christians and to lift one another up. But I cannot become cool because of who you are... I get cool through complete obedience and service to Jesus Christ. We can learn from those Laodiceans....

Have a wonderful day... Make your little part of the world better... Love mark Phil.4:11
