Promises, Promises

"If God will be with me and watch over me on this journey I am taking and will give me food to eat and clothes to wear so that I return safely to my father's house, then the Lord will be my God. And this stone that I have set up as a pillar will be God's house, and of all you give me I will give you a tenth" (Gen.28:20-22).

With a bit of magic on the keyboard, I am going to fast-forward 30 years from today's verses to the thirty fifth chapter of the Book of Genesis..."Then God said to Jacob, 'Go up to Bethel and settle there, and build an altar there to God, who appeared to you when you were fleeing from your brother Esau'" (Gen.35:1). So that you can re familiarize with the story, because of his trickery with his brother, aided by his mom, Jacob was running away from his angry brother Esau. He had a dream at Bethel in which he saw a stairway leading into heaven. I guess that 30 years can foggy one's memory, which it seems to have done to Jacob, because he has forgotten the vows he made that night. God is clearing the fog away... "When you make a vow to God, do not delay in fulfilling it. He has no pleasure in fools; fulfill your vow" (Ecc.5:4). God expects us to keep the vows that we make. Do you know of any married couples that have renewed their vows years later? I'm not sure about this one, but I guess that I kind of get it... I don't believe it has anything to do with a breaking of vows, but rather a re-committal.. Have we made any vows to God, as Jacob did that night in Bethel? When we became Christians we made a vow to God. We promised that to the best of our ability that we would turn from sin and follow Jesus with all of our hearts. How are we doing on that one? As we grow in the Lord, we make a vow to become better servants of the Lord as we become more involved with His Church... How are we doing with that one? During times of duress, have we ever made promises of renewed faithfulness to the Lord if He aids us? Are we carrying those through? The writer of the Book of Ecclesiastes continues a thought from the one above... "It is better not to vow than make a vow and not fulfill it. Do not let your mouth lead you into sin" (Vs 5-6). In regular people talk, we shouldn't let our mouths write checks that we don't have the money to cover... God doesn't want promises, promises... He wants us... More tomorrow....

Have a great day... Go about doing good... Love mark Phil.4:11
