Good Thinking Helps The Ball Club

"Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me --- put it into practice. And the God of peace be with you" (Phil.4:9).

In a popular baseball movie from 1988, the veteran catcher says this to the rookie pitcher: "Don't think; It will only hurt the ball club." He wants the pitcher to rely totally on him to make all the decisions in a ball game. The apostle Paul does not want us to stop thinking, but he does want us to do some good thinking. "Finally, brethren, whatever is true, whatever is honorable, whatever is right, whatever is pure, whatever is lovely, whatever is of good repute, if there is anything worthy of praise, dwell on these things" (Phil.4:8). The world's negative stimuli would want to defeat the process that Paul wants us to get ourselves into. Satan would not want our minds to be filled with the things of Phil.4:9. He would rather have evil thoughts to enter in and destroy both our physical and spiritual lives. The things that we allow to occupy our minds will soon affect the things we say and do. Paul's exhortation to fill our minds with good things is quickly followed by today's verse. "Whatever you have learned or received or heard from me, or seen in me --- put it into practice" Why? "And the God of peace will be with you." I think Paul is saying that the combination of virtues listed in verse eight and nine will produce a healthy thought pattern. This will result in a life of moral and spiritual excellence. By thinking godly things, we are able to guard ourselves against the negative stimuli of the world. The good things stand out in bold relief against those things that will lead us astray. The ball club may be our family or our church. We want to help them, don't we? The good thinking that Paul recommends here will help us and the ball club...
