He's No Overcoat

"I have found a friend in Jesus, He's everything to me, He's the fairest of ten thousand to my soul;
The Lily of the Valley, in Him alone I see All I need to cleanse and make me full whole.
In sorrow he's my comfort, in trouble He's my stay, He tells me every care on Him to roll.
"
From "The Lily of the Valley" Charles W. Frye 1881

Sometimes people confront problems in their lives that seem to to have no end or solution. Desperation will drive people to seek relief by trying something new, and memories from their past may see one more measure. They will give church a try. They pick one out, and on Sunday they walk in, trying to look as inconspicuous as possible. After services there may be a few handshakes and a few forced smiles and they go home. Several more Sunday services may pass and their problems have not gone away. The grand experiment is over... In the Rocky and Bullwinkle cartoons of the past, Bullwinkle would try to pull a rabbit out of his hat. When something else happened, Rocky would reply; "That trick never works!" The turning to Jesus for a quick fix almost never works. Jesus is not an overcoat that we put on in cold weather. The coat may help under some circumstances, but we won't wear it every day of the year. When someone comes to the Lord, it is for the complete wardrobe. We come to Him because He is the Lord and Savior, and blessings often follow. God hears and listens to the prayers of His people, and if He wills, He may enter their lives in a providential way as a partner and friend. As the song says; "I have found a friend in Jesus." Now lets understand this... Jesus is not a lucky rabbit's foot... Believing in Him will not always bring blue skies, rainbows, and pretty butterflies. Jesus has not promised anyone an immediate deliverance from every trial in our life. What He does offer to us as we follow Him is the ability to get our priorities in order and work through the crisis. Following Jesus will mean very little unless it is God-focused... You might very well ask the question of why then put faith in God and why obey Him? I think the apostle Paul gives us good reason... "Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction so that we will be able to comfort those who are in any affliction with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God" (2 Cor.1:3-4). It is all about the comfort we find in a relationship with Him... "In sorrow He's my comfort, in trouble He's my stay..." Jesus is no overcoat... He is the entire wardrobe..

Have a great start to your week... Begin it with a RAK or two... Love mark Phil.4:11
