Good Folks In Unexpected Places

"As he walked along, he saw Levi son of Alphaeus sitting at the tax collector's booth. 'Follow me,' Jesus told him, and Levi got up and followed him" Mk.2:14).

Three of the four gospels record the calling of Levi. The Book of Matthew calls him by the name we have come to know.... Matthew... Jesus did not go to the standard places one might think a religious leader would go to find disciples. Tax collectors were not on the top ten list of people that one would invite over for dinner, as they acted on behalf of the Roman government to collect the revenues. Later on, even Jesus hinted at their character when teaching about discipline. "If he refuses to listen to them, tell it to the church, let him be to you as a Gentile and a tax collector" (Matt.18:17). Jesus was able to find good people in unexpected places. The people of the day, as we see in later verses, allowed for no possibility that a person of Matthew's ilk could be reformed... You know... Once a tax collector, always a tax collector. When Matthew heard the call of Jesus, there was not even the tiniest bit of hesitation on his part. As far as we know, he left his livelihood, dropped everything, and followed Jesus. When Matthew heard that call, he determined that there was nothing that would stand in his way between him and God. This was the defining moment in his life. He would now have a new chart set for him by Jesus, with very different priorities. Matthew quickly decided that Jesus was more important to him than financial security. There are those in the world that need to make a similar commitment. Unfortunately, there are so many things out there that compete for a place ahead of Jesus. Decisions that people make about where and how they spend their time always jostle for a position in front of the Lord. Recreation or sports, financial stuff, hobbies, and other things bear much importance in how one will follow Jesus. People that make a decision for the Lord cannot be fence-sitters. Jesus must become the priority, and the other things must take their place in line. Where ever the Lord found us is our start point. Where we go from there determines our spiritual fate...

Have a wonderful day... Make your little part of the world better... Love mark Phil.4:11
