The Color Man

"So Jesus said to the twelve, 'You do not want to go away also, do you?' Simon Peter replied to Him, 'Lord, to whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life'" (Jn.6:67-68).

Most major sporting events that are televised have at least two announcers. One of them is the actual announcer who gives the viewers the play-by-play action of the game. The other one is usually an ex-player who is referred to as the "color man." The "color man" is there to add little tidbits about the game or some specifics about the action based on his experience. The "feeding of the 5,000" is the only one of Jesus' miracles to be recorded in all four gospels. John certainly qualifies as the color man, when he devotes 71 verses that are related to this wonderful miracle. John makes it succinctly clear that Jesus did not want to be viewed as just a miracle worker, so he adds many details surrounding it rather than just the miracle itself. Jesus had a message that demanded to be heard, and when the vast crowd that followed needed to be fed, He fed them. When the crowd wanted to be entertained, He rebuked them. "Truly, Truly, I say to you, you seek me, not because you saw signs, but because you ate the loaves and were filled" (V 26). John fills us in with the details... Jesus told them that they should not be seeking the food which perishes, but the spiritual food that they could only get from Him, the Son of God... When Jesus challenged them to think on a higher plane by putting their faith in Him to change their lives, they abjectly failed. "Many of His disciples withdrew and were not walking with Him any more," is the verse that preceded today's... Peter responded in such a way that should make us sit up and take notice... "To whom shall we go? You have the words of eternal life..." Only once in the history of man has God come down to earth in the form of man, died for the redemption of human beings, and gone back into heaven to intercede for them. The big question for humankind is this... If they are unwilling to place their faith and trust in Jesus, who or what will they turn to? The Bible acts as our color man.... Jesus is the Son of God, and He has the words of eternal life....
