Gaining Credibility

"Keep your behavior excellent among the Gentiles, so that in the thing in which they slander you as evildoers, they may because of your good deeds, as they observe them, glorify God in the day of visitation" (1 Pet.2:12).

I don't hear the word credibility used a lot these days. Simply put, it is a quality that involves being believed and trusted. One great good act or one very bad one, may be something that people remember us by, but I would submit that our credibility is established by a body of work. There is a major disconnect in our society today when it comes to gaining credibility because of the lack of trust that exists. If we read the rest of the chapter following today's verse, we'll find some things about gaining credibility in today's world. I think that two things will jump out at us, and they are submission and service. The apostle Peter lets us know that submission is an important part of living like Jesus. On His last night on earth, Jesus went into the Garden of Gethsemane and prayed to His Father. The most poignant, significant, and submissive words were these.... "My Father, if it is possible, let this cup pass from Me, yet not as I will, but as You will" (Matt.26:39). It is quite clear here in this passage that Jesus did not want to die. If there was any other way for humanity to be saved, Jesus would have rather traveled that road, as He pleaded with the Father. As we know, in the very end, Jesus laid down His will and acted out God's... Everything that Jesus did was out of submission to the will of the Father, and it became His service to mankind. It is certainly rare in our society today that we face the imminent persecution and shame that Jesus did on our Christian walk. When we pay taxes and follow laws, we are submitting the way we should. To a greater extent, when we see needs around us and try to be of service, we submit in an even greater way. Peter explains the reason for submission... "Submit yourselves for the Lord's sake" (V 13a). To me, the concept of gaining credibility is clear... It means that we put our lives in submission to the Lord, by putting His will ahead of ours... Our service to Him and others will follow...

Have a great day... Do good... Give God the glory... Love mark Phil.4:11
