The Road Taken

"I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads converged in a wood, and I ----
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference

From "The Road Not Taken" by Robert Frost 1920

In yesterday's sermon, I used a scripture from Jeremiah (6:16) to teach about the path(s) that the Lord wants us to travel down. I couldn't resist using the poem "The Road Not Taken" in the lesson. Frost's imagery is amazing to me, but I guess that is what great poets are supposed to do. Can't you just see the "Two roads diverged in a yellow wood?" Jesus wants us to travel down the right road with a gate at its end that is a narrow one... "Strive to enter through the narrow door." Why? "For many, I tell you, will seek to enter and will not be able" (Lk.13:24). He lets us know in Matt.7:13 that there are other roads to travel down, but none lead to the right gate... He teaches us about having a relationship with God the Father, and explains just how we are able to... "I am the way, and the truth, and the life; no one comes to the Father but through Me" (Jn.14:6). The way that Jesus offers us is a good way. There may be a few speed bumps along the way, but as long as we follow it, we'll be led to the place we want to go. Jesus invites us down the road, and makes us privy to the blessings that accompany the journey..."Come to Me, all who are weary and heavy-laden, and I will give you rest. Take My yoke upon you and learn from Me, for I am gentle and humble in heart, and you will find rest for your souls" (Matt.11:28-29). Jesus wants us to travel down that special road, and he will be with us along the way. He offers to take us from our weary state to one of rest. He lets us know that all along the way, we will get the benefits of His teachings as He says "and learn from me...." Frost tells us in his poem that his decision to take the road that he did would be shared with others... "I shall be telling this with a sigh somewhere ages and ages hence...." The road that we take will change us in a way that others will be aware of. It is then that we can share our story, and invite them along that way. It will make all the difference....
