Reporting For Duty

"Know the God of your father, and serve Him with a whole heart and a willing mind; for the Lord understands every intent of the thoughts. If you seek Him He will let you find Him; but if you forsake Him, He will reject you forever" (1 Chron.28:9-10).

Today's verse is some advice that King David, near the end of his reign, was giving to his son and successor, Solomon. I find the words wonderfully applicable to us today. Being the king of Israel in David's eyes is much more than just sitting on a throne... "Know the God of your father (me) and serve Him...." It would seem that one of Solomon's first duties was to know God... It is clear to me that throughout history, God is displeased when the people do not know him... Here are the words of the prophet Hosea: "My people are destroyed for their lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I will also reject you from being My priest" (4:6). God has made Himself known to us through the creation and through the revelation of sending His Son and our first duty is to Know Him.... David's second kernel of advice is this... "and serve Him with a whole heart and a willing mind" The NIV calls it a wholehearted devotion... The KJV says "with a perfect heart and a willing mind..." However we view the words, they all mean that another one of our duties is to serve Him. Jesus described this fierce loyalty to Him to be the greatest of the commandments (Matt.22:36-38). There is more to this service than just loyalty however. Accompanying this loyalty must be a willingness to serve. As a matter of course, Jesus expects us to serve... Some of the describing terms about this service might be: sincerely... cordially... cheerfully... freely... without hypocrisy... not through force... This loyal and willing service is the kind that Jesus expects of us today. It is even reflected in the prosperity of our giving back to Him. We must be committed to serve our God completely and willingly. To truly know Him is to serve Him with sincerity and passion.... If we haven't, its time to report for duty...

Have a great day... Let His light shine through you... Love mark Phil.4:11
