The Perspective For Contentment

"Not that I speak from want, For I have learned to be content in whatever circumstances I am" (Phil.4:11)

I wrote yesterday about the "thank you note" found in the last part of the Book of Philippians. Did you read and meditate upon Phil.4:10-23? As we read today's verse, his expression of thanks was not to hint that he was in great need, because he spoke of his contentment... Paul goes on to explain... "I know how to get along with humble means, and I also know how to live in prosperity...." (V 12a) His contentment revolved around something he had learned. Learned behavior is the key here as it is most of the time... "in any and every circumstance I have learned the secret of being filled and going hungry, both of having abundance and suffering need..." (V 12b) Most of us have not suffered the adversity that the apostle Paul suffered, and a few times he listed some of his near death experiences. Through all of these experiences, he wrote Phil.4:11 and claimed contentment in all circumstances.. If there is a key here for us to learn from, I think it could possibly be something called perspective... Verse 13 gives us some good insight... "I can do all things through Him who strengthens me" We find out who enabled him to be content whether he was full or hungry... We also learn who allowed him to be content whether he was in abundance or need...I believe that the strength he talks about in verse 13 was certainly the correct perspective. It is the proper perspective that he received from the Lord. It even reached forward to his perspective about life and death... "For me, to live is Christ and to die is gain..." (1:21) Paul did not have a death wish, but he did know the right perspective. "But godliness actually is a means of great gain when accompanied by great contentment" (1 Tim.6:6). The true strength that Paul found about the real necessities of life, was in his perspective of the real source of that strength... Jesus Christ! Are you looking for contentment? The true perspective is found only in Jesus...

Have a wonderful day... Make your little part of the world better... Love mark Phil.4:11
