Bartering The Birthright

"And if you belong to Christ, you are Abraham's descendants, heirs according to promise" (Gal.3:29).

If you are one of those people that does the daily crossword puzzle in the newspaper, you know that the 4 letter word for "birthright barterer" is Esau.. The story of this event unfolds in the 25th chapter of Genesis where Jacob and his mom plot how to steal the birthright of the first-born son, Esau. I won't tell the whole story, but in the end, their subterfuge works and Esau lost the double portion of the father's (Isaac) inheritance. The issues at stake for these times were great when Jacob and Esau bartered over the birthright. Esau's bad bargain entailed two significant mistakes that we might want to read and learn from... Number one is that Esau had no foresight, and chose the sensual over the spiritual...Today's verse tells us that we have an inheritance promised to us from God, but we must make the the correct choice. We cannot allow the sensual part of life to overpower the spiritual, lest we run the risk of losing the inheritance. Esau's second mistake was in thinking only of the present, without considering the future... He tossed away his future happiness and rewards for present gratification. The stew he ate may have made him feel good for a short time, but it was drop of water compared to an ocean when he should have been considering all of the tomorrows... We need to hold on to our birthright by pursuing peace and holiness. We need to look at the wonderful promises made to us by the Lord and see how valuable they really are... Because of his bad decisions, Esau was called a "profane person..." Lets be careful not to fall short of God's grace as we exercise discipline and godliness in our lives...

Have a great day.... Do good... Give God the credit... Love mark Phil.4:11
