Improvement Numero Tres

"You are the salt of the earth; but if the salt has become tasteless, how can it be made salty again? ... You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden...." (Matt.5:13-14).

In the last two devotionals, I have written about our relationship with God and our brethren. Hopefully we are working daily to improve these relationships. As I complete this improvement seminar, it would be remiss to leave out our relationships with people in the world around us. Our neighbors, co-workers, and to an extent, even strangers, all play a part in our lives. In today's verses, Jesus explains our part in their lives. First, we are to be the salt of the earth.. Maybe you are one of those people who are not supposed to have much salt in their diet, but the teaching here should not be lost. Most of would admit that a bit of salt enhances the flavor of many foods, and I even know people who put some of it on watermelon. Jesus' point is that we are to have a positive influence on those around us. The light of the world teaching says that it is up to us to demonstrate a better way. Sermons are much better when lived rather than preached, so the light of Christ ought to be exhibited in our lives. In this way, the good news of Christ can be communicated to them. The lost do not come to know Jesus through some osmotic way. People become Christians when they are influenced in a positive way by a Christian. Is that Christian going to be you or me? Doing good on our part should not be restricted to only those who are of the same faith as us. The apostle Paul was quite succinct when he wrote these words.... "So then, while we have opportunity, let us do good to all people...." (Gal.6:10). Now I know that he completes the statement by saying and especially to those who are of the household of faith, but the entire teaching should be taken at its face value.. As salt and light, we are to use the time allotted to us to have a positive influence on those who come into our spheres... Have we improved this past year in this area? Time is passing by, and we have responsibilities....

Have a great start to your week... Begin it with a RAK or two... Love mark Phil.4:11
