Teachable Moments

"When your son asks you in times to come, saying, 'What do the testimonies, and the statutes and testimonies mean which the Lord our God commanded you?' then you shall say to your son........" (Deut.6:20-21).

Teachers try to produce teachable moments for their students all the time. We are all aware of what they are... They are these times when a curiosity for something unknown presents itself, and we have the opportunity to fill in the blanks.... Such moments take place in today's verse, when a son asks the "big whys" about his families' faith. If we continue in the Book of Deuteronomy, here's what the father is instructed to say: "Then you shall say to your son, 'We were slaves to Pharaoh in Egypt, and the Lord brought us from Egypt with a mighty hand" (V 21). After extolling the great works of the Lord, the writer says this: "So the Lord commanded us to observe all these statutes, to fear the Lord for our good always and for our survival, as it is today" (V 24). The writer puts even more teeth into this teachable moment with this: "It will be righteousness for us if we are careful to observe all this commandment before the Lord our God, just as He commanded us" (V 25). The writer, by giving a context for his answer, teaches the big lesson. Why do we observe these laws and statutes? We do it because the Lord has shown us how to live... We obey Him because it is a vital part of our heritage to do so. The Law is the sign, seal, and signature of His kindness toward us, and in it we find wisdom and strength... As we look at the blessings in our lives, they pale in comparison to the Law that our Almighty God has given to us... Teachable moments are all around us, begging for us to explain and live the truth of God's Word. Tomorrow we'll look at some of those moments and relate them to us today...

Have a great day... Let His light shine through you... Love mark Phil.4:11
