The Troubles We've Seen

"Moreover David was greatly distressed because the people talked of stoning him, for all the people were embittered, each one because of his sons and daughters. But David strengthened himself in the Lord his God" (1 Sam.30:6).

There is a classic African-American spiritual song that dates back to the first part of the nineteenth century entitled, Nobody Knows The trouble I've Seen. It's words tell of suffering that has been experienced, but offers hope in the form of Christianity. Variations of it have been performed by some of the musical giants of the twentieth century including Louis Armstrong, Marion Anderson, Lena Horne, Paul Robeson, and Sam Cooke. We all experience troubles in our lives, as testified by today's verse. David's life was a great litany of problems. I could list ten of them without trying very hard. In today's verse, we find David in Ziklag. Having fled from Saul, he now made an alliance with the Philistines, who naturally did not trust him. Not only is David distressed because the Amalekites had kidnapped women and children, (some of his own family) but his own people are very upset with him. Perhaps upset is a mild term.... "the people talked of stoning him..." The last part of the verse is what I want us to pay special attention to. What does David do when some of his family have been lost and his life is threatened? "But David strengthened himself in the Lord his God." This was not the first problem that David faced in his life, nor would it be the last, but he knew where to turn. The very first thing that David did was to turn to the Lord! He felt that with the strength he received from the Lord, that he would be able to deal with any problem that was before him. During troublesome times, David often wrote Psalms to express himself. Maybe we can turn to a few of these Psalms over the next few days to find out what it really means to strengthen ourselves in the Lord... Maybe we will glean just how we are strengthened by putting our trust in the Lord as David did. "Nobody knows the trouble I've seen, nobody knows but Jesus...."

Have a wonderful day... Go about doing good... Love mark Phil.4:11
