Dealing With The Problems - Stay Close

"Cursed is the man who trusts in mankind and makes flesh his strength, and whose heart turns away from the Lord..... Blessed is the man who trusts in the Lord and whose trust is in the Lord" (Jer.17:5, 7).

The past two devotionals dealt with how David handled his problems. Today we'll look inwardly, and how we deal with the everyday stresses of life. Our problems may be family, job, physical, church or financial in nature. We all have them. Today's verse is not a panacea for all of our woes, but is certainly the starting point that the Lord wants to be at. Many times we think that we are so tough, either mentally or physically, that we can tackle the problems by ourselves. God does not want us to leave Him out of the picture. It gets so bad sometimes, that we forsake Him entirely in our quest for a solution. We may no longer go to Him in praise and prayer, and even neglect assembling together in worship where we are to edify and uplift each other. Our attitude might be this; "Perhaps after I get everything straightened out, then I'll be more able to serve Him and live for Him...." That is certainly a good example of getting the cart before the horse... We read the Old Testament to get examples of how God's people got strength from Him in times of need, and nothing has really changed. "Draw near to God and He will draw near to you" (Jas.4:8).... "Therefore humble yourselves under the mighty hand of God, that He might exalt you at the proper time, casting all your anxiety on Him, because He cares for you" (1 Pet.5:6-7). The truth of the matter is that God wants us to put our trust in Him... When we leave God out of the equation, He will allow us to deal with those problems on our own, without His help, and we just don't want that.... The writer of Proverbs puts it this way... "Trust in the Lord with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding" (3:5-6). Maybe David said it the best.... "My soul clings to you; Your right hand upholds me...." (Psa.63:8). Those who put their trust in the Lord will find deliverance, strength, and happiness....
