The Vow - Keeping The Promise

"But Hannah did not go. She said to her husband, 'After the boy is weaned, I will take him and present him before the Lord, and he will live there always'" (1 Sam.1:22).

It was a common feature of Old Testament piety to make vows which usually involved offerings of thanks and praises. Hannah's husband, Elkanah, no doubt had made vows to the Lord as he prayed for God's blessing on his flocks and crops. The vows were fulfilled at the Feast of Tabernacles, but according to today's verse, Hannah did not go... She didn't go because she had made her own vow to God concerning the birth of their son Samuel, and she was going to keep it. She had promised (V 11) that if God gave her a son that she would give him to the Lord for all the days of his life. Back then, one of the symbols of service was not to have one's hair cut, and she included it in her vow... People of faith excel at keeping their promises... "So now I give him to the Lord. For his whole life he will be given over to the Lord. And she worshiped the Lord there" (V 28). As we look at this woman of great faith, there are lessons to be learned. God has no time for those who renege on their promises... "When you make a vow to God, do not delay in fulfilling it. He has no pleasure in fools; fulfill your vow. It is better not to vow than to make a vow and not fulfill it" (Ecc.5:4-5). As Christians, our "yes" and "no" are as solemn vows... Jesus said this in the Sermon on the Mount... "Do not break your oath, but keep the oaths you have made to the Lord.... Simply let your 'yes' be 'yes,' and your 'no' be 'no.'" (Matt.5:33, 37). As we worship the Lord, fulfillment of vows or promises should never be done in a begrudging manner, but in the spirit in which they were given... As the words of Christ dwell within us, we should worship Him with a heart filled with gratitude that is tempered by God's fulfillment of the promise He gave to us... "Whatever you do, whether in word or in deed, do it all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him" (Col.3:17). When we decided to take Jesus into our lives, we made promises to Him... Lets keep them.

Have a great day... Go about doing good.. Love mark Phil.4:11
