Double Whammy

"My people have committed two sins: They have forsaken me, the spring of living water, and have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water" (Jer.2:13).

Some 600 years before Christ, in the 13th year of Josiah's reign, the prophet Jeremiah was sent to the kingdom of Judah. The northern kingdom was already in captivity, and God wanted to spare Judah through Jeremiah's warnings. The prophet reminded them (2:1-3) of their past fidelity, but then came the warning... It recorded for us in today's verse. The people were guilty of two great sins or evils. First, they have forsaken Me, the spring of living water. The living water was meant to denote fresh viable water that came from springs, fountains or running streams. This would be the opposite of stale, stagnant, and putrid water. Secondly, they have dug cisterns that were broken and could not hold water... Cisterns were tanks in which rain water was held, and at best, even if clean, they could only hold stagnant water. To make matters worse, the cisterns were cracked, so they could hold no water at all. God was letting them know that He was their source of living waters. It is exactly what Jesus explained to the Samaritan woman at the well in Jn.4:13-14... God reminded the people that it was Him who led them through the wilderness to the land of milk and honey. He reminds them; "But My people have exchanged their Glory for worthless idols" (2:11).

This is a warning and admonition to us today. We must always remember the source of our pure living water, as expressed by Jesus Himself... "If anyone is thirsty, let him come to me and drink. Whoever believes in Me, as the scripture has said, streams of living water will flow from him" (Jn.7:37-38). We must rely on Jesus to supply us with that life-giving water. The water that precedes from the throne of the living God. We forsake the fountain of living water when we substitute other things (broken cisterns) for it. It is sad to see some of the things that people have substituted for God... Things that promise, but do not deliver. The second part of the double whammy tomorrow...

Have a wonderful day... Do good and give Him the glory... Love mark Phil.4:11
