The Second Evil

"The priests did not ask, 'Where is the Lord?' Those who deal with the law did not know me; the leaders rebelled against Me. The prophets prophesied by Baal, following worthless idols" (Jer.2:8).

The first evil of yesterday's Double Whammy was that the Israelites had forsaken their God, the living water... They were suffering from both short and long term memory loss. They forgot who had led them out of Egyptian bondage and into their own land of milk and honey. To compound that, they forgot the very source of their prosperity and departed from the living God... Back in those days, cisterns or vats were used to gather excess water for usage. The vats had to to be kept as clean as possible because the water would easily become stagnant. Their second evil was that "they have dug their own cisterns, broken cisterns that cannot hold water." They had hewn cisterns that held no water! Israel had left God for poor substitutes like Baal. "Be careful that you do not forget the Lord your God, failing to observe His commands, His laws and decrees I am giving you this day" (Deut.8:11). We need to take care in our Christian lives also. We can also be guilty of having cisterns that hold no water by going after the false gods of today. I don't think we'll have trouble with Baal, but how about materialism or immorality? "For of this you can be sure: no immoral, impure or greedy person---such is an idolater---has any inheritance in the kingdom of Christ and of God" (Eph.5:5). That's one broken cistern... Jesus made a plea to us, and the apostle Paul reinforced it, that we all be one. He wanted unity of the Spirit in His believers, that we would not be easily deceived by false teaching, a second broken cistern.. Finally there is the problem of false prosperity. "You say, 'I am rich; I have acquired wealth and do not need a thing.' But you do not realize that you are wretched, pitiful, poor, blind, and naked. I counsel you to buy from Me, gold refined in the fire, so that you can become rich; and white clothes to wear, so that you can cover your shameful nakedness; and salve to put on your eyes, so that you can see" (Rev.3:17-18). We can be lulled into a false sense of security and forget Paul's important words, "therefore, let him who thinks he stands take heed that he does not fall" (1 Cor.10:12). Lets make sure that we do not leave God for a poor substitute, and do not stop drinking from the fountain of living water....

Have a great day... Let His light shine through you.... Love mark Phil.4:11
