I Second That Emotion

"These people honor me with their lips, but their hearts are far from me" (Matt.15:8). "But everything should be done in a fitting and orderly way" (1 Cor.14:40).

Have you been in churches where "amen" and "praise the Lord" ring out from the audience in response to something the preacher says? Does it make you feel at home, ambivalent, or uncomfortable? My two scriptures this morning come from both sides of the aisle. Jesus talks about worship that involves the heart. I am positive He is saying that worship not coming from the heart is empty and dead. The apostle Paul in my other verse is speaking about order. If emotional outbursts are just that and are actually unrelated to what is being said, it is disorderly. People ought to be joyful each time they get together for worship, because God wants us there. I believe that there can be both joy and order in our worship. There is certainly room for "amens" and "praise the Lords" when they are done with sincerity and in keeping with what is being said. No one wants to take the wonderful joy out of worship. When I preach, both the verbal and non-verbal assents I see and hear let me know that people are attentive and that they want to hear a message about God. My title this morning is the name of a 1967 song by Smokey Robinson. The song is to a girl that he wants to be serious with. He is looking for a permanent relationship rather than a casual one, hence the words in the chorus: "So, if you feel like givin' me a lifetime of devotion... I second that emotion" The Lord wants our relationship with Him to be a permanent one, filled with joy. What better way to reinforce this thought than with words from the Bible... "Rejoice in the Lord always, Again I say, rejoice!" (Phil.4:4) "I was glad when they said to me. 'Let us go into the house of the Lord'" (Psa.122:1) "Singing and making melody in your heart to the Lord.." (Eph.5:19) "Be glad then. you children of Zion, and rejoice in the Lord your God" (Joel 2:23) "Blessed are the people who know the joyful sound! They walk, O LORD in the light of your countenance... In Your Name they rejoice all day long, and in Your righteousness they are exalted" (Psa.89:15-16)...

Have a great day... Let His light shine through you... Love mark Phil.4:11
