Good Better And Best

"Did you ever have to make up your mind? Pick up on one and leave the other behind, its not always easy, and not often kind did you ever have to make up your mind? Did you ever have to finally decide? To say yes to one and let the other one ride... There's so many changes, and tears you must hide, did you ever have to finally decide?"

From Did You Ever Have To Make Up Your Mind by John Sebastian 1966

As adult human beings, but especially as Christians, we have a great amount of responsibilities. We have duties we must fulfill as spouses if we are married and as parents if we have children. We also must earn a living, so there are those responsibilities that come with being an employee or an employer... There is always the constant struggle to do those things that are good. But... Is good always good enough? It seems like the report cards I received in school and later gave out as a teacher, ranked good as only number three out of four. There is better... In the world of collecting old baseball cards, there are companies like PSA that are called authenticators. They look at the card from several aspects and give it a score from 1- 10, with 10 being the best. In regular people jargon they are ranked as poor, fair, good, excellent, and mint.. Its kind of like watching Antiques Roadshow. The point I am getting at today is that sometimes we can allow what is good to get in the way of what is better. It calls for a prioritizing of our activities, because if we are not careful, we can become distracted by what is good and miss out on what is better. I chose some lines from an old Lovin'Spoonful song instead of a scripture to make the point today. Sometimes it is not always easy to make a choice on things when there are so many options that seem all right. Somewhere down the line, we have make up our mind and finally decide. Later on in the song, the young man thinks he really likes a girl, but when he takes her home he gets distracted by her older sister. The father in the song has the final say... "When in walks her father and takes you in line and says; 'Better go home, son, and make up your mind'..." I think that Jesus put everything straight about prioritizing when He said these famous words; "But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness....." When we make it a priority to seek what is best, that being the will of God, everything usually falls into place. I will use the illustration of Mary and Martha tomorrow to further this important point...

Have a wonderful day... Do good.... Give God the credit... Love mark Phil.4:11
