Distractions Or Discipline

"The seed that fell among the thorns stands for those who hear, but as they go on they way they are choked by life's worries, riches, and pleasures, and they do not mature" (Lk.8:14).

We have this wonderful story in our New Testaments about Jesus' friends, Mary and Martha. (Lk.10;38-42) Martha had invited Jesus into her home and He had accepted. I want to do a little sidebar here... When our kids were younger, they always questioned why their mom and I spent so much time getting things prepared when we were going to have company. That we wanted our guests to feel comfortable in a neat and clean setting didn't register back then, though I am sure it does today. Martha was concerned about her friend Jesus' comfort as she scurried around the house getting things done. The verse says; "But Martha was distracted by all the preparations that had to be made" (V 40). While Martha was in whirling mode, Mary sat at Jesus' feet, taking in His teachings... As weird as this may sound, Martha was distracted by her own doing of good. It was all put into perspective when she complained to Jesus and he replied: "You are worried and upset about many things, but only one thing is needed. Mary has chosen what is better, and it will not be taken away from her" (Vs. 41-42). By doing good, Martha was missing out on what was actually better. The cares of the world, as we see in today's verse, can render us unfruitful and even unprepared. If we get distracted by even some good things, we might miss out on the better ones, and like Martha wind up worried, troubled, or stressed out. We can always remember Esau and his hunger, as he sold his inheritance for a bit of food. Was the food that good? We have Jesus' teaching on this in Matt.6:31-33 when He talks about the temporary things the world says are ultra-important... About those good things Jesus says; "But seek first His kingdom and His righteousness, and all these things will be given to you as well..." (V 33). We need to make the proper choices so we will be free of anxiety like Mary, and praised by the Lord. When we become disciplined enough to do that, we will be better spouses, parents, kids, employees, citizens, and church members. We must make the choice... Distraction or discipline? The ball's in our court...

Have a great day... Make your little part of the world better... Love mark Phil.4:11
