Love, Hate And Our Spiritual Heritage

"You shall not bow down to them or worship them; for I, the Lord your God, am a jealous God, punishing the children for the sin of their fathers to a third and fourth generation of those who hate me, but showing love to a thousand generations, of those who love me and keep my commandments" (Ex.20:5-6).

Good parents always try to help their children to get themselves prepared for the life that they have ahead of them. I was the first member of my family to go to college. A great deal of that came from the desire of my parents to insure that my financial future would have fewer hardships than theirs. Our desire for our children was much the same.. Its about a kind of heritage, isn't it? There's so much more than a financial heritage however... As you read today's verses, they might almost seem unfair. Why would God punish someone for something done by a grandparent, or even a great-grandparent? If our parents loved us as they should have, we were blessed to live in a home with structure and discipline that helped us to grow, yet contained grace and mercy for when we fell short. If someone grows up in a home where the parents don't love God or follow His teachings, they've grown up in a place where something was missing. Obviously, the decisions that parents make have an effect on who their children become. In a similar fashion, each of us is to pass on a spiritual heritage to future generations. The sooner that people learn this, the better decisions one will make for him or herself. I'm not exactly sure how to translate today's verses, but I'm going to give it a try. Meditate on these thoughts, and if you have another take on it, get back to me... For those who hate God, their sins will affect their children to a third and fourth generation, but for those who love God, they will affect their children to a thousand generations.... Its almost as if God were saying this: "Don't worry.... Love will outlast hate all the time.... Love wins!!" In essence, our spiritual heritage that we should pass on from generation to generation is that love triumphs. Jesus said it perfectly... "Love the Lord your God with all your heart and with all your soul and with all your mind. This is the first and greatest command. And the second is to love your neighbor as yourself" (Matt.22:37-38). Love wins... Pass it on....

Have a great day... Let His love shine through you... Love mark Phil.4:11
