Don't Move Backwards

"If they have escaped the corruption of the world by knowing our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ and again are entangled in it and overcome, they are worse off at the end than they were at the beginning" (2 Pet.2:20).

There is probably no greater expert in the field regarding the seriousness and consequences of sliding backward than the apostle Peter. As we trace his history, we find an impetuous man, never afraid to put his faith and feelings on the line. He stepped out of the boat and walked on the water toward Jesus, only to get afraid and sink. He was supposed to wait for Jesus when He went up on the mountain to pray and fell asleep. He boasted to Jesus; "Lord, I am ready to go with you to prison and to death," only to deny that he even knew Him three times. Peter is an expert when it comes to understanding the effect of moving backward instead of forward. As we view his disastrous night of denial, we can have an interesting anatomy lesson... The anatomy of a backslider.... Peter's first fateful step into backsliding was his pride, which we all have a bit of... He should have remembered the words of the proverb that said: "Pride goes before destruction, a haughty spirit before a fall" (16:18). He should have remembered the words of Jesus teaching about greatness in the kingdom.... "I tell you the truth, unless you change and become like little children, you will never enter the kingdom of heaven. Therefore, whoever humbles himself like this child is the greatest in the kingdom of heaven" (Matt.18:3-4). If we lose our humility, we move backwards instead of forward. Pride can often lead to laziness and overconfidence.. When told to keep watch, Peter kept falling asleep. Jesus told them and us to "be always on the watch and pray that you may be able to escape all that is about to happen, and that you may be able to stand before the Son of Man" (Lk.21:36). Without diligence, we can fall away too. The danger here is that this drifting away thing is often so gradual, that we don't realize that it is happening, and it catches us off-guard. Before we know it, we find ourselves far away from the Lord...There is more that can happen that can cause us to move backward instead of forward. We will take a closer look at these over the next few days...

Have a great start to your week... Begin it with a RAK or two... Love mark Phil.4:11
