Happy Vernal Equinox

"And God made the two great lights --- the greater light to rule the day and the lesser to rule the night --- and the stars" (Gen.1:16)

At 12:57 PM today here in NJ, it will be vernal equinox, or the first day of spring. At that precise moment, there is no angle regarding the relationship between the earth and sun. The sun will be directly overhead at the equator at that exact moment. The vernal refers to spring, and the equinox to "equal night..." Today (and autumnal equinox) are the only two days of the year in which the length of day and night is precisely equal. They are also the only two days of the year in which the sun will rise exactly in the east and set precisely in the west. You've got to remember that I was a science teacher, so I hope that you did not find the science mini-lesson boring... The calendars we use are based on astronomical data, as are the length of days and years. It should not seem strange to us that there are a great number of references in the Bible to the sun, moon, stars, and planets... Since it is the Vernal Equinox today, I thought that I might share some of those passages with you. For me, they are more reassurance that our great and mighty God created the universe... "Can you bind the beautiful Pleiades? Can you loose the cords of Orion? Can you bring forth the constellations in their seasons or lead out the Bear with its cubs? Do you know the laws of the heavens? Can you set up God's dominion over the earth?" These were some of God's words to Job (38:31-33). You might find that 38th chapter interesting.. "When I look at your heavens, the work of your fingers, the moon and stars which you have set in place, what is man that you are mindful of him?" These are the words of King David who considers the majesty of the Lord's creation in Psalm 8. It it a short psalm, which you might also find good for reading and meditation... I just want to share one more passage with you this morning... "The heavens declare the glory of God; the skies proclaim the work of His hands. Day after day they pour forth speech; night after night they display knowledge. There is no speech or language where their voice is not heard. Their voice goes out into all the earth, their words to the ends of the world. In the heavens he has pitched a tent for the sun...." (Psa.19:1-4). Psalm 19 would also be a good one to read and meditate upon... Some people look up and see the sun, moon, stars, and planets... I look up and see the beautiful work of a great and mighty creator... How about you? Happy Vernal Equinox...

Have a great day... Do good, give Him the glory... Love mark Phil.4:11
