The Literacy Test

"My people are destroyed from lack of knowledge. Because you have rejected knowledge, I also reject you as my priests; because you have ignored the law of your God, I will also ignore your children" (Hos.4:6).

Many Americans have a reverence for the Bible, but unfortunately, they don't read it very much. Most folks can tell you more about the plot of the novel they just read or the scores on the sports page of the newspaper than some important aspects of the Lord's Word. When it comes to the truths of God's message to us in the Bible, many have become barely functional illiterates... This lack of knowledge, as pointed out by God through the prophet Hosea, can affect individuals, families, communities, and even churches... "'My people are destroyed from lack of knowledge...." The prophet Amos calls it a famine. "'The days are coming,' declares the Sovereign Lord, 'when I will send a famine through the land ---- not a famine of food or a thirst for water, but a famine of hearing the words of the Lord' " (8:11). The prophet goes on... "Men will stagger from sea to sea and wander from north to east, searching for the word of the Lord, but they will not find it" (V 12). When I was a boy, alcoholics were called "drunks." There was a man who lived a half a mile or so up the road from our home that was a drunk. Almost every day, I watched old man Riley stagger from the corner, all the way to his home. Some days he would almost fall and stagger into the woods.... When people don't have the proper guidance in their lives, they often stumble and don't know where to turn. In ignorance, they make improper choices that may affect them for the rest of their lives. When Moses was so long in coming down from the mountain in Exodus 32, the people had Aaron fashion a golden calf to worship... They forgot, "You shall have no other gods before me. You shall not make for yourself an idol in the form of anything in heaven above or in the earth beneath or in the waters below...." (Ex.20:3-4). Psalm 119 contains some beautiful passages in reference to this, and it would be good for us to read and meditate on them... Vs. 105, 111, and 165 come to mind. Their essence is that without God's Word there is no real guidance or direction in life. There is also nor real joy or peace. Lets choose not to stumble down the road of life like old man Riley... Stumbling because we do not have the light of God's Word to guide us home....

Have a great day... Make you little part of the world better... Love mark Phil.4:11
