The Marathon Prep

"Run in such a way as to get the prize. Everyone who competes in the games goes into strict training" (1 Cor.9:24-25).

There are elite runners who have been training for years to run in a race like the marathon. In the Boston Marathon yesterday, it was a cluster of about 40 or so runners that were allowed to start first, as the rest of the 36,000 runners went off in waves according to their qualifying times. I must now tell you why I am devoting this time to the marathon. Jane and I were in Salt Lake City last week visiting two of our children and their spouses. Our son Alan and son-in-law Freddie made a plan last year to run in the Salt Lake City Marathon, which was held this past Saturday. Due to an injury, Alan was not able to complete his training and run, but Freddie did. He found a program designed for runners that wanted to run a particular time, and started following it in January. To know my son-in-law is to understand that he would follow the plan as closely as possible, which he did. The program was designed in such a way that certain amounts of mileage were done each week, culminating their way up to race day. There were also dietary suggestions to be followed which ended in the last week or so with large amounts of carbohydrates. Freddie ate pasta every night we were there and a huge plate of pancakes on the morning of the race... Do you get the picture? If one wants to compete well in the marathon, "whim" preparation won't work! The marathon of life that we run is so multi-faceted, and consists of a series of experiences that we face every day. So things may sneak up on us, but generally we know that there will be some ups and downs. We must handle those ups and downs as they come... "Everyone who competed in the games goes into strict training." As Christians, we are in the race for the duration so we must stick by by the plan... "Your word is a lamp to my feet and a light to my path" (Psa.119:105). In God's Word we have the plan to prepare for the race... "When the Counselor comes, whom I will send to you from the Father, the Spirit of truth who goes out from the Father, he will testify about me" (Jn.15:26). Upon getting into the race, the Holy Spirit is given to us to help with all the preparations and inevitabilities... I left out something important, so tomorrow we will talk about the race itself, after all, that's what its all about...

Have a great day... Let His light shine through you... Love mark Phil.4:11
