The Service Industry

"Serve the Lord with gladness" (Psa.100:2).

During my college days a few of my part time jobs took me into what is generally called the service industry. New Jersey is one of the two states in the country where a person has their gasoline "served" to them. I liked to say that I was in charge of petroleum distribution on the retail level... A gas jockey... I also worked as a food server in one of South Jersey's finer restaurants. How well I did my jobs depended upon the level at which I was able to serve the public. Jesus said: "Whoever serves me must follow me; and where I am, my servant will also be. My Father will honor the one who serves me" (Jn.12:26). It is clear to me that I am still in the service industry, only the service is to the Lord. The psalmist put it so simply in today's verse... "Serve the Lord with gladness..." It was made clear to me by my superiors in my days as a food server, that the one I served (the customer) was the most important part of my job. Their job was to prepare good food, and mine was to serve it in an efficient and courteous manner. In the Christian life, service to the Lord is a mandatory part. Jesus set the example for us... "And He who sent Me is with Me; He has not left Me alone, for I always do the things that are pleasing to Him" (Jn.8:29). Just as Jesus served the Father, we are to serve Him. When we live our lives according to His will, we are serving Him. When we teach others, either by word or example, we are serving Him... When we make clear-cut moral decisions, even when tempted, we are serving Him. When I was serving food, my financial success (tips) were generally based upon the quality of the food and the quality of my service. If we want to lead a successful Christian life, the quality of our service is paramount.. The psalmist said it perfectly... SERVE THE LORD WITH GLADNESS....

Have a wonderful day... Go about doing good... Love mark Phil.4:11
