On The Desert Island

"See, I am doing a new thing! Now it springs up; do you not perceive it? I am making a way in the desert and streams in the wasteland" (Isa.43:19).

I opened my teen class last Wednesday with a little graphic of a desert island. You can probably imagine a small tropical island complete with a sandy beach and a few palm trees, can't you? I then asked this age old question... "What are three things that you would need to survive if you were stranded on a desert island like this?" Since they are much too young to remember Gilligan's Island, I could ask the question with an amount of seriousness... The natural things like food, water and shelter were used as responses, with an allusion to an "I phone..." Ah, those modern kids... On the right side of my graphic were three more questions and I asked them what their spirits would need to survive. The lesson revolved around something that I could use in a teen class, but is applicable to all of us. It is rather easy to understand what our bodies need to survive, but many people don't take the time to think as hard about their spiritual needs. Thankfully, God knows, and my lesson was about how He shows us what we need more than anything... God, through the prophets, would often remind the people how He brought them out of slavery in Egypt and back to the Promised Land... He reminded them of how they miraculously received food water and stuff to wear. The exodus had become a key part of the Israelite's identity. After the 10 plagues, the parting of the Red Sea, and manna from heaven, you would have thought that they learned the spiritual lesson... The lesson is the same today as it was back then. It is just as simple and straight-forward also. The Israelites knew it from Deut.8:3, and we know it from Matt.4:4... "Man does not live on bread alone, but on every word that comes from the mouth of God..." To flourish spiritually, we must trust in God.... If only all lessons were that simple...

Have a wonderful day... Make your little part of the world better... Love mark Phil.4:11
