Idol Discovery

"All who make idols are nothing, and the things they treasure are worthless. Those who speak up for them are blind; they are ignorant to their own shame" (Isa.44:9).

The children of Israel would often lapse into periods when they got mixed up too intimately with their neighboring inhabitants. Just about all of them were into the worship of idols. By idols I am speaking in the classic sense where people worshiped some physical object that was carved, shaped or hewn by humans. If you study through ancient history you can find out what they were and how they were worshiped. God, of course, took a dim view of idol worship and often had prophets like Isaiah refer back to their days of slavery in Egypt to remind them of God's great power in delivering them... As good as these referrals were, the people still had their lapses. Isaiah 44:9-20 is a satire on the foolishness of idolatry, and would make for a good reading and meditation time. To most people in America, the worshiping of idols is a foreign concept, relegated to the past or faraway countries... It would seem incongruous to imagine someone worshiping a piece of wood or rock that had been crafted with their own hands. Nevertheless, preacher's often take to the pulpit with sermons about idolatry today. Sometimes the story of Zacchaeus (Lk.19:1-10) is used. He was a tax collector, and in those days they had bad reputations, mostly about greed... I am sure that you know where I am going with this... God says that anything that we find more appealing to us than Him, runs the danger of becoming an idol. Our problem then resides in discovering those idols before they detract from our relationship with Him... Take a few moments today to think of some of those things and how they might pull us away from God. You have your "homework" and I'll continue these thoughts tomorrow...

Have a wonderful day... Let His light shine through you... Love mark Phil.4:11
