Break Time

"Zacchaeus was a wee little man, a wee little man was he.
He climbed up in a sycamore tree, for the Lord he wanted to see.
And when the Savior passed that way, He looked up in the tree.
And said, 'Zacchaeus, you come down! For I'm going to your house today! I'm going to your house today!'
"

A Traditional Children's Song (Lk.19:1-10)

If you sang the above song in church as a child, you probably remember all the motions that went along with it. Zacchaeus had the hidden idol of greed as did many of the tax collectors of his day, but he found himself intrigued by the teachings of Jesus. After receiving a visit from Jesus, Zacchaeus said this: "Look, Lord! Here and now I give half my possessions to the poor, and if I have cheated anybody, I will pay back four times the amount." (V 8)... Zacchaeus realized that he had to get rid of his idol. More than likely, we have not become rich from cheating people - greed may not be our problem. Identifying our idols can sometimes be tricky, because its easy to convince ourselves that our idols are not idols at all... This is especially true when our idols --- by themselves --- are not bad things. Lets consider a few questions... 1. When you are angry or sad, how do you deal with those emotions? 2. When you are happy about something, how do you celebrate? 3. What do you do with your free time? How do you react when you can't do the things you wrote in 1, 2, or 3? If your answer to # 4 is that you get really upset, you could have a hidden idol that needs to be torn down... If you watch TV to deal with your emotions, and the cable or satellite goes out and you get angry, the TV could be an idol. Does it mean we have to give up TV? The best way to deal with these idols is to take a break from them... Unless your idol is a sinful habit, it doesn't mean we have to give it up completely... Perhaps we could take some of that TV time and turn it into a period of prayer or Bible reading... We might ask God for help in keeping Him as the center of our life... Just a thought.... Take a break....

Have a great day... Go about doing good.... Love mark Phil.4:11
