Learning Patience

"We want all of you to show this same diligence to the very end, in order to make your hope sure. We do not want you to become lazy, but to imitate those who through faith and patience inherit what has been promised" (Heb.6:11-12).

The question about why we serve God is an age old one. Is it for the short-term benefits we may receive, or is it more involved. In the Old Testament, Job was accused of serving God because he was blessed in the present, as Satan asked God, "Does Job fear God for no reason?" (1:9). We see in the first chapter that God knew Job would be faithful whether it was to his benefit in the here and now or not. I certainly believe that the Lord has blessed me and righteousness is rewarded, but the primary reward comes to us when this life on earth is over. It is why the apostle Paul states; "Always give yourself fully to the work of the Lord, because you know that your labor in the Lord is not in vain" (1 Cor.15:58). The quality of patience, the quality that Job is known for, is defined as the ability to endure, hold out, bear up, or persevere. The patient person is willing to wait for the long-term results of life, even when the present is not always rosy... He is a person who trusts with an endurance, as he looks to the future to keep him steady in the present. Its like that marathon race I wrote about last month... Each step gets us closer to the finish, with some of them being pleasurable, and some painful. We must not forget the assurances the Lord has given us in the daytime, when the nighttime closes in... Being a patient person is much like being a world-class athlete, or a farmer... The work that it takes to achieve the goal is always tempered by the rewards of success... If the success doesn't come quickly, we are willing to keep working until it does. We are all works in progress when it comes to patience, so let us not grow weary in doing good, for at the proper time we will reap a harvest....

Have a wonderful day... Let the Lord Shine Through You... Love mark Phil.4:11
